In Japan, the category of COVID-19 in the Infectious Diseases Control Act has been reclassified from Class 2 to Class 5 as of today, May 8, 2023. Accordingly, reports regarding infected employees in the DISCO Group will be terminated as of today.

Background and Countermeasures

Because the employee had contact with an infected person, they took a PCR test on Thursday, August 26 and tested positive. The Kure City Health Center determined that there were no close internal contacts based on an explanation regarding the working conditions and infection prevention measures against COVID-19 that are being implemented at DISCO.

As a precaution, all employees who had even insignificant contact with the applicable employee during the 14 day period leading up to the applicable employee’s last day in the office (Tuesday, August 24) will be working from home or in a dedicated space isolated from other employees for 14 days from the date of contact to prevent any increase in contacts within the company. On Wednesday, August 25, DISCO confirmed that two contract employees working at Hiroshima Works Kuwabata Plant tested positive for COVID-19. Since the last day that the applicable employee came to the office at Headquarters / R&D Center was Wednesday, July 21, they had no internal close contacts at Headquarters. In addition, the applicable employee traveled to Hiroshima Works on Tuesday, August 3 to provide manufacturing support. As DISCO requires a 14-day screening period after long-distance travel using public transportation, the applicable employee began this screening period at a hotel in Kure City after arriving in Hiroshima, refraining from any significant outings. Situation and Countermeasures

The applicable employee was working in the office until Tuesday, July 27. However, since they were at risk of becoming infected through family members in the same household commuting to work, school, etc., they were wearing a surgical mask all the times, and working in an individual booth, which is a personal booth that is covered with a vinyl sheet on all four sides meant for employees at risk, both in their department and in conference rooms. In addition, they followed internal rules such as maintaining a distance of 5 meters when they needed to speak to someone outside the booth, carrying sanitizing alcohol with them at all times, and disinfecting all areas that they had touched before and after using any internal facilities.

Although we are investigating whether there were any internal close contacts just to be safe, upon taking their working conditions into consideration, we have determined that there are no internal close contacts within DISCO based on the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare standards. Therefore, DISCO Headquarters / R&D Center is operating as usual.

On Thursday, July 29 (JST), DISCO confirmed that an employee at DISCO Headquarters / R&D Center tested positive for COVID-19.

Background

Thursday, July 15A family member living with the employee took a PCR test upon being designated a close contact with a person who tested positive at their school. The employee stood by at home starting the day after the PCR test (Friday, July 16).
Monday, July 19Because the family member tested positive for COVID-19, the employee also took a PCR test and tested negative. They continued standing by at home.
Wednesday, July 28The employee began to feel unwell the day before and thus took another PCR test.
Thursday, July 29The employee tested positive and is recuperating at home.

Situation and Countermeasures

The employee is engaged in development work and was previously working only the night shift, which does not have any contact with other employees, because they were at risk of becoming infected through family members in the same household commuting to work and school. When they used internal facilities for experiments and verifications, they conducted their work conforming to internal rules, such as disinfection of areas touched before and after use. In addition, they stood by at home starting July 16, the day after the family member was designated a close contact.

After the previous state of emergency was lifted (June 2021), DISCO continued to prohibit use of public transportation and will keep this countermeasure in place with this most recent declaration.

On Tuesday, May 18, DISCO confirmed that a contract employee working at Hiroshima Works Kure Plant tested positive for COVID-19. The employee has been admitted to a hospital and is receiving medical care. They had no internal close contacts, and operations at Kure Plant have not been affected.

Thursday, May 13The applicable employee had slight symptoms, including a nasally voice, so they left work early and stood by at home from Friday, May 14.
Saturday, May 15The employee went to see a doctor (no PCR test).
Tuesday, May 18The employee went to see a doctor again because they felt unwell. They took a PCR test, which came back positive for COVID-19. They had no fever and were recuperating at home.
Wednesday, May 19The employee was admitted to a hospital and began receiving medical care.

Situation and Countermeasures

The applicable employee is a contract employee who mainly engages in product packing in the logistics division at Kure Plant. Under the COVID-19 infection prevention measures implemented at DISCO, all members in the logistics division were working under the following conditions.

  • Wearing a surgical mask at all times
  • Keeping a distance of 1 m or more from other people
  • Keeping conversation at a minimum when communicating with other employees
  • No collaborative work
  • Carrying a bottle of sanitizer at all times to disinfect areas touched
  • Members identified as having a certain amount of risk of becoming infected outside of the workplace conduct their work within individual booths surrounded on all sides by a vinyl sheet

As stated above, on Wednesday, May 19, the Kure City health center determined that there were no internal close contacts.

However, to be safe, six members from the same division who had minor contact with the applicable employee are working from home for 14 days. Product packing operations are now being handled by personnel dispatched from other departments without any issues. Shipments have not been affected, and operations at Kure Plant continue normally.

The employee will be back in the office after 14 days of quarantine at home starting January 22 as a precaution.

25th Rep. COVID-19 Infected Employee at Hiroshima Works

DISCO has confirmed that a contract employee working at Kuwabata Plant, Hiroshima Works, tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, January 9. The employee is being hospitalized and treated under the instruction of a health center in the jurisdiction starting Monday, January 11. It was determined by the health center that the employee had no internal close-contacts.

The employee has been working in an individual booth surrounded on all sides by a plastic sheet with a mask on at all times, as the employee was considered to have a certain risk of infection. In addition, an employee who was working in another booth within 5 meters of the infected employee is now working from home. (The employee took a PCR test on Sunday, January 10, and was determined to NOT be infected on Monday, January 11). Kuwabata Plant has thoroughly disinfected the employee’s working area and the route the employee took to it. Therefore, there has been no impact to product supply systems due to this issue.

DISCO will continue to implement thorough infection prevention measures group-wide and will work hard to provide a stable supply of products and solutions.

24th Rep. DISCO Production, Shipment, and Supply Status with Regards to State of Emergency Declaration

A state of emergency was declared for Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Saitama prefectures by the Japanese government in response to the spread of the novel coronavirus on Thursday, January 7. This notice provides information about DISCO’s status and countermeasures in relation to this declaration.

Headquarters and R&D Center Operation (Tokyo)

Commuting using public transportation is banned until the state of emergency is lifted, and infection countermeasures will continue to be conducted as specified previously at DISCO.

Plant Operation (Hiroshima and Nagano Works)

A state of emergency was not declared in Hiroshima or Nagano prefectures, in which DISCO’s plants are located. Thus, Hiroshima Works (Kure Plant and Kuwabata Plant) and Nagano Works (Chino Plant) will operate as usual.

Infection Countermeasures at DISCO (examples)

  • Employees are prohibited from commuting using public transportation, and have been instructed to commute by means that provide a lower infection risk, such as by car or bicycle.
  • Designated commuter busses have been chartered in Hiroshima Works to transport employees who do not have their own means of transportation.
  • Masks must be worn at all times, including at home.
  • Employees must work from home or stay at home if they or a one of their family members feel sick, even if only slightly.
  • Employees must measure and report their body temperature every day and immediately report any incident in which they encountered any risk of infection.
  • Separate office flow lines and office spaces must be prepared depending on the encountered risks, etc.

Shipments and Delivery

It has been confirmed that our shipping service suppliers will continue their operations for domestic and overseas shipments. Thus, there will be no significant impact on production of precision processing equipment, precision processing tools, or maintenance parts, which will be handled as usual.

As stated in the previous reports, more than six months’ worth of raw materials are always kept in stock and human resources are secured for production. DISCO has confirmed that a contract employee working at Hiroshima Works Kuwabata Plant tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, January 2. The employee developed symptoms on Wednesday, December 30, and received a positive PCR test on Saturday, January 2. The employee will be treated at a facility designated by their health center.

The employee had been on standby at home since Sunday, December 20, after one of their family member’s coworkers received a positive PCR test on Saturday, December 19.
The employee had no internal close contact with other employees on the date the employee developed symptoms or the two days beforehand, and operations at Kuwabata Plant have not been affected.

21st Rep. COVID-19 Infected Employee at Hiroshima Works

DISCO has confirmed that a part-time employee working in the company cafeteria at Hiroshima Works Kuwabata Plant tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday, December 25. The employee currently has no symptoms and is standing by at home until instructions are given by the health center in charge. Although the health center has determined that the employee had no internal contacts, all staff working in the cafeteria at Kuwabata Plant will also stand by at home until Thursday, January 7.
In addition, all lines and spaces in Kuwabata Plant that the employee and other cafeteria staff used were disinfected early morning on Friday, December 25, and the cafeteria is operating normally with the dispatchment of cafeteria staff from Kure Plant.

16th Rep. COVID-19 PCR Test Results for At Risk Overseas Affiliate Office Employee

As announced in the 15th report, a processing engineer in the California Office in the overseas affiliate DISCO HI-TEC AMERICA, INC. had close contact with an employee who tested positive for COVID-19. The employee’s PCR test results were returned on Tuesday, July 28, and it was confirmed that the employee tested negative.
The employee will be back in the office after 14 days of quarantine at home starting from Saturday, July 18, when the employee had close contact with the employee who tested positive.

15th Rep. COVID-19 Infected Employee at Overseas Affiliate Office

DISCO has confirmed that two Processing engineers in the California Office in the overseas affiliate DISCO HI-TEC AMERICA, INC. tested positive for COVID-19 on July 20 and 26 (Monday and Sunday, California time).
Employees at the California Office have generally been working from home since March 16 (Monday) in accordance with jurisdictional instruction. However, the Processing Service Department, of which the employees were members, handles processing of next-generation materials for R&D departments for semiconductor and electrical component manufacturers mainly based domestically in the U.S., and also conducts developmental work in the fields of 5G, IoT, aerospace, and aviation. DISCO HI-TEC AMERICA received a formal request from a customer who acquired an Essential Service Certificate, and for that reason, those performing the processing were commuting to the office with the permission of the government.
The chain of events and how the situation was handled are as follows.

Thurthday, July 16
  • Employee A had a fever (39℃) that morning. He visited a doctor and took a PCR test instead of going in to the office.
  • The entire California office was shut down, and all employees in the Processing Service Department who had planned to go in to the office stayed home.
  • Employee hearings were conducted in accordance with CDC standards. Confirmed that Employee B had close contact with Employee A (used the same car).
Monday, July 20
  • The PCR test results for Employee A came back positive.
  • The entire California office was disinfected by a professional contractor in accordance with CDC regulations.
Wednesday, July 22
  • The Processing Service Division in the California Office resumed operations.
Sunday, July 26
  • The PCR test results for Employee B came back positive.

Moreover, close contact between Employee C and Employee B, who also shared a car, was confirmed separately. Employee C took the PCR test and the results are pending. Therefore, the Processing Service Division of the California Office is currently operating with the exception of the three employees stated above (two PCR infected and one with internal close contact).

Products from our factory will be shipped as planned, and precision processing equipment will be shipped as normal. In addition, though the declared state of emergency was lifted by the Japanese government on Monday, May 25, DISCO will continue to implement infection prevention measures to continue supplying parts and equipment to customers.

11th Rep. Sales and Production Status

The Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry has requested that each organization under the ministry promote business activities such as telecommuting for workers in the seven prefectures in which a state of emergency has been declared as of Monday, April 13. In addition, semiconductor factories were added to the list of businesses to continue operations during a state of emergency on Tuesday, April 7. (See the 10th report.) In response to this, DISCO will work to continue delivering equipment to semiconductor factories by implementing strict health and infection countermeasures and allowing only those employees who can commute without excessive human contact and those who need to go to the office to be present in the office. DISCO has established the following commuting criteria for DISCO headquarters, R&D Center (Tokyo), and all offices and branches including Osaka Branch.

Commuting Criteria

  • Employee must not be feeling sick
  • Both employees and the people they live with must perform the infection risk countermeasure originally defined by DISCO
  • Commuting must be necessary to perform the task
  • Commuting must be possible without using public transportation

In addition to the infection countermeasures described in the 7th report, countermeasures including sanitizing shared facilities, equipment, and tools and prohibitions on borrowing things from other employees have been implemented. With these countermeasures, DISCO will prevent the spread of infection in the office.

Equipment Production and Shipment

Although a state of emergency was not declared in Hiroshima or Nagano prefectures, where DISCO’s plants are located, DISCO will continue production of precision processing equipment and precision processing tools as described above. In addition, DISCO has chartered a microbus for employees without a means of transportation except for public transportation to maintain production.

10th Rep. Japanese Government Specifies Semiconductor Factories as Businesses to Continue Operations

While a state of emergency was declared on April 7, the Japanese government has added semiconductor factories to the list of businesses to continue operations.
DISCO recognizes itself as a manufacturer that produces products supporting the continued business activities of semiconductor factories. Therefore, DISCO will continue to manufacture precision processing tools (consumables used for semiconductor production) and semiconductor processing equipment as much as possible, and to deliver these products to our customers’ semiconductor factories.
Moreover, as part of our own business continuity, DISCO will continue thoroughly implementing the infection prevention measures relayed in the seventh report.

9th Rep. Production, Shipment, and Supply Status

A state of emergency was declared by the Japanese government in response to the spread of the novel coronavirus on Tuesday, April 7. This notice describes DISCO’s status and countermeasures based on this declaration.

Production

A state of emergency was not declared in Hiroshima or Nagano prefectures, in which DISCO’s plants are located. Thus, Hiroshima Works (Kure Plant and Kuwabata Plant) and Nagano Works (Chino Plant) are operating as normal while implementing the infection countermeasures stated in the 7th report on March 24. Employees have been prohibited from commuting using public transportation and have been instructed to commute by means that provide a lower infection risk, such as by car. As stated previously, this will have no impact on production of precision processing tools for some time. In addition, it has been confirmed that equipment to be shipped in April and May will be produced as planned.

Shipments and Delivery

It has been confirmed that our shipping service suppliers will continue their operations for domestic and overseas shipments. Thus, there will be no significant impact on production of precision processing equipment, precision processing tools, or maintenance parts, which will be handled as usual.

7th Rep. Production Status and Infection Countermeasures

This notice is an update regarding the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Precision Processing Tool

As stated in the fifth report on February 26, more than six months’ worth of raw materials are always kept is stock for production. Therefore, this would not impact production or shipment for a while.

Precision Processing Equipment

It was confirmed that equipment to be shipped in April and May 2020 will be produced and shipped as planned.
We will closely monitor the status of shipments scheduled to take place starting in June, including logistics, to respond to developments regarding the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Infection Prevention for Employees and Preventative Measures for Internal Infection

The following measures are being implemented at the Hiroshima Offices (Kure Plant and Kuwabata Plant), DISCO’s major production bases.

Commuting

From the point of view of infection prevention, commuting by car is recommended for employees who normally use public transportation. In addition, designated commuter busses have been chartered at the Kure plant in Hiroshima to transport employees.

Internal Infection Prevention

In order to prevent internal infection pathways at both plants, the Precision Processing Tool Manufacturing Division and other Divisions have separated walking paths and limited use of internal facilities and welfare facilities, including the employee entrance, bathrooms, conference rooms, and cafeteria.

Moreover, the following measures have been implemented for the entire company, including the Hiroshima Office.

Before Leaving Home

In addition to body temperature measurement and internal system registration already being conducted, a system for contacting nurses in case of health problems by filling out an interview sheet has been introduced. This will make it possible to detect infections early.

Commuting

Not only is wearing a mask required at all times while using public transportation, but employees have been instructed to commute at different times to reduce the risk of infection.

Entering the Office

Employees must sanitize their hands and replace their masks with a new one to enter the office. Customers suspected of being infected are not authorized to visit the company. Not only do we check visitors’ overseas travel histories and health conditions, but we also measure body temperature and require visitors to sanitize their hands and wear a new mask when visiting.

Working and Lunch

Wearing a mask is mandatory during work and communication among employees and customers without masks is prohibited.

Internal Sanitization

The frequency of periodic cleaning of bathrooms, elevators, and handrails has been increased.

Overseas Travel

Overseas travel is prohibited for work, and personal overseas travel is discouraged. Employees who have traveled overseas must work from home for fourteen days after returning. They may then return to the office if they show no symptoms.

Miscellaneous

In order to prevent an employee’s family from being a source of infection, all employees are required to submit an “Action Plan to Prevent Infection at Home.” The BCM department compiles information on virus risks to make explaining the situation to your family easier.

In Case of Infection

The infected employee will be required to take a leave of absence, and theirs and neighboring departments will be sanitized. Though we believe it is possible to control secondary infection and internal close contact by implementing the above measures, if there is any doubt, employees will be instructed to work from home for fourteen days.
In addition, an environment in which employees feel safe to take days off has been cultivated by changing the attendance system, which includes being able to use expired PTO days.

In order to fulfill our obligation to supply products to customers, measures will continue to be implemented to correspond with the situation.

This is a follow-up announcement regarding the production status of DISCO products in response to the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Precision Processing Tools

As stated in the fourth report on February 13, because DISCO keeps at least a six-month supply of raw materials in stock for standard production, production and shipment are currently unaffected. By continually replenishing the raw material stock, DISCO will maintain a system that enables production without a reduction in stock.

Precision Processing Equipment

It has been confirmed that all equipment scheduled for shipment in March and April will be produced and shipped as planned.
After May, we will continue to monitor the situation as some component parts are produced by suppliers in China, depending on the specification. In addition, it was confirmed that there are no production delays at the relevant suppliers after resuming operation on Monday, February 10, and there are parts in stock either in China or Japan. If the situation persists and there is concern regarding parts supply, we will respond by switching to replacement parts, etc., to ensure undelayed production and shipment.

In response to the spread of the novel coronavirus, this is an announcement regarding the production status of DISCO products.

Precision Processing Tool

Because DISCO keeps a 6-month supply of raw materials in stock as part of our BCM (business continuity management) measures, production and shipment are currently unaffected. We are also continuously replenishing this stock to ensure a constant supply to maintain our production and shipment schedule.

Precision Processing Equipment

Equipment scheduled for shipment during February 2020 will be produced and shipped without any delay. During and after March, standard specification equipment can be produced and shipped as scheduled. However, because some suppliers of component parts base production in China, depending on the specification, there are some concerns regarding future supply. The aforementioned suppliers resumed operations on Monday, February 10, 2020, but it has been confirmed that the operation rate has fallen due to factors such as remote work. If the situation becomes prolonged, DISCO will proceed with measures such as switching to alternative suppliers with whom DISCO has built relationships and design changes to ensure stable production and shipment.

Support system

Production/Shipment

Production and shipment have not been affected as all DISCO products are produced in Japan. Both precision processing equipment and precision processing tools are being produced as scheduled.

Deliveries

It is expected that the status of deliveries to China will return to normal starting Monday, February 10 (after the Chinese New Year).
